Description

My first image from La Palma (Canary Island)

The Cat's Paw Nebula, also known as Bear Claw Nebula and Gum 64, is an emission nebula and star-forming region located in Scorpius, close to the stinger of the scorpion. At declination of -36 degrees it does not clear the horizon enough at my usual light polluted site in Vienna at a latitude of 48 deg. Therefore, I took the opportunity to image it from a latitude of 28 degrees on the island of La Palma during my vacation in October 2015. Despite already late in the season, I was able to image the nebula on 6 different evenings shortly after sunset while still reasonable high in the sky and before it was setting in the Atlantik Ocean together with the summer Milky Way.

Due to the Sony ICX694 sensor's blue sensitivity, the Idas LPS-D1 filter mounted on the 0.85x reducer was used in front of the Astrodon RGB filters to cut out the deep blue spectrum and to avoid bloated stars in the blue channel.
